Woods at Beauty Hill Disc GolfHow
we got here.
I have been living at the top of Beauy Hill for a dozen years. It is a lovely old 18th century farm house
with a big New Hampshire barn, not attached, various out buildings, which have
been used for various animals and farm activities througout the years, a field
of hay, meadows and woods.
Through a variety of person circumstances
in two thousands four, I found myself away from home all of the daylight hours
and several evenings as well. I have a
love for the land, the beautiful open spaces, and the pine forest and I knew if
I sold the land the chances are that it would be developed. I didn't want to see that happen and at the
same time I didn't think it was fair to keep all this for myself and not share
it with others. On one hand it didn't
seem right for one person to own so much, and not put it to use. (That's the Yankee in me.) I felt that I should do something with it to
at least pay the taxes and keep the place in good repair.
I thought for a long time about some things
I could do that wouldn't compromise my integrity. I seriously considered putting in an acre of organic
strawberries, I even had the acre cultivated and had a tree removed. If the weather had cooperated in 2005, those
strawberries would be here this spring.
But the field never dried out, it was the wettest summer on record.
I am fortunate to have the best job in the
world. I am the Chichester Town
Librarian. As such I meet the most
interesting people. One of these folks
is Blaze and Dawn Konefal and their son Forest. Blaze and Dawn are the owners of Crazy Maze, a portable maze that
travels to parks and fairs all over New England.
Blaze has great ideas for all kinds of
sciency type activities and we eventually got together and put a maze in my hay
field. We opened this to the public and
added some other attractions, one of which was a Frisbee Golf Course.
Our sign on Rt. 28 advertising our Maze
and Frisbee Golf Course brought a lot of interest from the real disc golfers in
the area. I'm sure they were terribly
disappointed when the saw our hula hoops and large Frisbees, but they were
gracious and encouraging and tried to convince me that this farm would be a
great place for a professional disc golf course and if I would build it they
would come. Three or four of them laid out a course for us on the spot. It was fun and I found myself really liking
disc golfers.
So being the intelligent entrepreneur
type that I am, I started to research Disc Golf and I thought this sounds like
fun, it fits with my philosophy of saving the land, not destroying it with dangerous chemicals, sharing this beautiful
place with others, helping people understand the value of keeping space open
for animals and ecosystems, having food
and shelter for my family and building a decent retirement account,
I appreciate that Disc Golf is a sport
that almost anyone could play. It's a good walk for folks that need to get
exercise. Personally I would rather play a game than exercise, (I'd rather split wood, lift hay bales, or
garden than exercise).
I thought Disc Golf is a great sport to
get kids involved in because unlike football, or soccer, this is a game that
could be played for a lifetime. We
could have tournaments and offer great prizes to get the kids motivated to
play. I know I know very little about
having tournaments, raising sponsors, directing traffic, but what the hey I
could learn. Right?
By the middle of July we were pretty sure
we were going to do this, but we knew we wouldn't get it in until 2006. Three 'professional' disc golfers laid out a
course for us, for free, and they seemed to love doing it. I love the enthusiasm of these folks. We used ideas from everyone and I think we
laid out a challenging 18 hole course.
We got great feedback when we actually put it in this spring.
We are done cutting brush and small
trees and making the pine forest look like Narnia and we've got this
web site up. I suppose I need to learn
about LLC vs. Sole Proprietorship and all that...hey I could learn...right?
We opened June 1, 2006 !!!
We'd love to hear from you.
